NEW YEARS DAY 2010 - Moclips

The weather starts the year out with a bang at the Washington Coast. Besides the outstanding fireworks at midnight, we had sustained winds of 23mph all day, with gusts to 41mph and the highest tides of the year. Coastal flood warning issued with 20 foot waves....it was awesome. In addition to mother natures activity on this first day of the year... it is the 2nd day of clam digging and hundreds of lanterns speckle the beach below us.

Year (2009) in review. A total of 76.20 inches of rain was recorded by our Davis weather instruments at Seashore Dreams this year. The highest temperature was 89F and the low was 16F, with a windchill of 7F. The highest wind recorded in 2009 was 58mph. No extreme storms. We did have snow several times in January and February but no blizzards to speak of.

All in all it was a typical weather year at the Washington Coast.

Icey Cold at the Beach

A break from the winter storms this weekend. Cool, crisp and icey best describe this weekend. Low temps 27F, no wind to speak of, clear skies and lots of sunshine.

Yeah...Another Windstorm on the Coast

Saturday - November 21, 2009 - 1pm. Cliff Mass writes that we are in a calm now and another interesting weather event will happen this evening.

Graphic show was copied from Cliff Mass Blog today. I chose it because it really shows where the low is coming in - right here - along the Southwest Washington Coast. The intense pressure gradient is what could cause the winds to kick up. We shall see whats in store for Moclips, Washington tonight.

Lakewood to Moclips

Arrived here (Moclips) at 4:30pm just before sunset. Lots of flooding in Grays Harbor County. The pastures along route 12 look like lakes and the farms were definately on waterfront property this week. Satsop and Montesano areas were definately all flooded. The towns weren't but the farms definately had a lot of water. Hoquium river seemed higher than normal.

Lots of debris along Ocean Beach road, but no snapped telephone poles like there was in December 2007. The worst that happened at our house was the garbage cans were everywhere, plants in the garden were blown over and the 100 feet of landscape plastic (we thought was secured) wrapped itself around our Dish Antenna. No broken windows, no shingles missing and all skylights were secure. All is well in my book.

In checking our Davis Vantage Pro2, the high wind this week was 54 mph from the west and the total rainfall for the storm (since 11/14) was 10.33 inches. Thats a goodly amount of rain for 5 days --even for out here at the Washington Coast.

The winds and rain are starting to pick up at 7pm. 25-45mph at this moment. Only .25rain for today so far. Still it always seems so loud and ferocious out there.

The dogs and I shall sleep well.

Going through Withdrawals

I can hardly stand that I have been away from the coast this week. Too many classes and appointments did not allow for an overnight away. All three vacation homes are open this week which is unusual and all are getting blown by their lonesome selves. Our location is considered Central Washington Coast - Pacific, Beach and Moclips, WA - just 12 miles North of Ocean Shores.

All appointments should be done by 2pm tomorrow and I'll head west with my dogs to the coast to see if there is any damage to the homes. I'm anxious to check out the recorded highs/lows so I will pull out my Davis weather station to see what they were - especially curious on the high wind. It appears lots of rain came this week too...so I'll get some totals.

I do hope the next wind event happens this Saturday when I'm down there. Love getting the photographs...love watching the storms come in over the Pacific.

Next report will be from Seashore Dreams Vacation homes in the historic village of Moclips, WA

GIANT WAVE WARNING - Winterstorm kick-off

I love the Washington Coast. I love the beginning of the Winter Storm season. The weather changes at a moments notice, the sunsets are prettier and the air is fresh and freeing.

Today was 2009's kick off to winter at the coast. Winter in Washington State for that matter. Being a weatherbug, I follow a local icon Cliff Mass, I have a Davis Vantage Pro2 weather station at our Vacation rental - Seashore Dreams - on the Washington coast and I report the info to coolwx.com.

Today was a delightful day of a mixture of weather. From high winds of 52mph, to calm and sunny during high tide enabling my husband and I to photograph the waves coming in way beyond normal. Attached are some photographs taken all in the same day.
